Firefly
It may just be the fact that I'm lonely and any vicarious interpersonal relationship is way good right now, but I really really really love Firefly. It's such an amazing show, Joss is a genius, and I can't even believe they cancelled it.
Holy crap, Firefly is the most amazing show I have seen in a long, long time. It works on so many levels. On the surface, it's this messed up future society where the powers of America and China united to form the Alliance that rules the galaxy, so everyone can speak both English and Chinese, and all of the cultures of Earth are all mixed together, to the point of not really being distinguishable from one another, which creates a really beautiful kind of unity that you can't see anywhere else. And the way that it's filmed, on older handheld cameras to give it a frenetic, right now immediacy almost like a documentary, with these lighting flares and weird, almost accidental lighting effects, and color schemes. And theamazing costumes of Inara, that look like a mixture of old Europe, India, and China, and then the western looking cowboy clothes of Mal and Zoe, and the sci fi jumpsuits of Kaylee and Wash, the simple clothes of Book and the neat expensive clothes of Simon, the camo and tee-shirts of Jayne, and the messy hodge podge clothing of River. It's such a mix of different styles, and yet they seem to fit so perfectly together, it's amazing. And then all the strange angles and pretty/messy beautiful shots of space and the ship and planets.
But then on another level, the characters are just these amazing people and they're so different from one another, and yet they relate to each other and are connected in so many different, fantasticly spectacular ways. They are so fully realized as characters, and they relate to one another so naturally and they have such a rapport. They all relate to one another in different ways, but you always know how any one feels about any other, despite the fact that there are nine different people in this large ensemble cast. They are so close and so webbed together with these relationships that they really are like a family, and all of this seems to real and human that you forget that they aren't.
And then again, on another level, there is such deep philosophy about life and existance and the world and everything embedded in all of the episodes. There is a deeper meaning to everything, like a dream, it's not in your face, but it's there, making everything even more right and layered and meaningful and great.
On top of that, there's the writing which inextricably ties this show to Joss. You can see the little jokes and humor that are unmistakably Joss. They remind me of the amazing coolness of Buffy, only with a completely different premise and set of characters and visual identity. It has that great "Joss" feel that makes me all warm and fuzzy and happy. Joss Whedon is a FREAKING GENIUS. It is just amazing and . . . cool. And I am so upset that FOX cancelled it.
For real. This show overcame so much CRAP just to exist. First, FOX wouldn't air the pilot, the intended premier, first. They aired the second episode first. And the timeslot they put it in, Fridays at 8?!?!?!?!? Did they want to kill the show? And the commercials they made for it were ridiculous, giving things away and being stupid. I watched it originally because 1)Joss Whedon created it (and that means it must be good) and 2)Jewel Staite (Catalina from Space Cases) was in it. But I still missed a lot of episodes due to it's timeslot, despite the fact that I liked the show. And the fact that they aired it all out of order, and didn't air three episodes. RAR!!!!!
Okay. But the SUPER COOL AMAZING YAY FABULOUS THING is that Universal Studios bought Joss' idea to make a FIREFLY MOVIE!!!!! It's supposed come out in 2005 AND most of the original cast has already signed on to work on it!!!!!!! Yay yay yay! I am so happy. This show is my new favorite pet tv show (now, it's not my favorite tv show, because that place is always held for Buffy, another Jossverse creation) and I am planning on attempting to inflict it on you all, even if it's just "Serenity" the premier. It is such a good show! Wheee. Joss it the man.
And I'm alone in the Ghost town of NR1. Wheeeeeeeeeeeee.
